How to Choose An Athletic Shoe?

The shoe should flex at the ball of the foot where the foot flexes. Test each shoe by pressing the shoe together at the toe and the heel and watch where it flexes. Now ask yourself, "Do you want your foot to flex there?" In addition, each heel counter (around the heel) should be firm or stiff to stabilize the rear foot at the calcaneus and control motion. Feet are very different between individuals and therefore there is no one shoe that is right for everyone.

When selecting athletic shoes put a different brand or style shoe on each foot. Now run, cut, jump, accelerate, and stop abruptly, on both carpet and hard floor. With this test there should be no doubt in your mind as to which shoe will work best for you. Keep the good performing shoe on your foot and replace the poorer performing shoe with another brand/style and repeat the test. Keep doing this through at least 5 or 6 pairs of shoes. When you are done you should have narrowed your selections down to two pairs. Now try on each pair with it's proper mate and go through the performance test as before. You should be able to eliminate all but the best pair for your feet.

Your decision at this point will be much better for both you and your feet.

Foot Problems

The forces acting on your feet are one to three times your body weight when walking. They are upwards of four to five times your body weight when running. The forces when vertical leaping can reach six to seven times your body weight according to computerized gait analysis.

If you think of how many times in life your feet have been stepped on by man or beast in addition to the typical forces of your own body. You may have an appreciation for how those twenty six bones in your feet may get misaligned and create dysfunctional arches. This would then result in poor shock absorption and altered motions of the lower limb. The lower limb motions would then change pelvis and low back motions that can make them unstable. Does it sound familiar? This is exactly why your foundation (the feet) is so important to your health and coordination.

It is so important that many famous athletes wear functional foot orthotics to relieve the stress on their knees, hips and low back to perform better.

Most foot problems stem from overuse, poor shoe choice and congenital anomalies. Most of these problems can either be avoided, corrected or helped by conservative care through correct shoe dynamics, foot adjustments (realigning of the bones for normal function), foot orthotics or specialized shoes. Foot Professional is the natural approach to solving these problems of foot pain and dysfunction. Our doctor and expertly trained staff recognize that some people have waited too long with their condition and may need corrective surgery to resolve their problem.

We can facilitate a referral for an elected surgery when necessary. We have found that many people can avoid surgery or prolong having it by using our conservative approach.

Treatment Options
Foot Professional offers the most diverse options of foot care in the industry. Most orthotic companies when casting or scanning the feet will make one to an abnormal foot and therefore make you an orthotic to that is conformed to that foot. We at Foot Professional think it would be a good idea to make an orthotic to a normal/optimal foot. That is why if you choose to see our doctor first, before getting casted or scanned and he realigns the twenty six bones in each foot, you have a solid chance of compliance to the new orthotic.

SELF TREATMENT
If you come in and prefer to treat yourself we have a fine assortment of generic orthotics to suit your needs. You may try them on for fit and comfort and will be helped by our courteous staff. You may also try on our line of shock absorbing clogs, shoes and boots. If you need to modify something with a heel lift, arch pad, met pad or heel wedge we have it. Maybe you would like an orthotic cast to your foot the way it is. Our staff can help you with that.

DOCTOR EXAM, FEET ADJUSTMENT, ORTHOTIC PRESCRIPTION
Should you choose to have our doctor examine your feet, you will be scheduled for about a thirty to forty-five minute appointment. You should bring three types of enclosed shoes that you typically wear for evaluation and footwear education. Also bring the type of socks you wear with these shoes. After the feet examination the findings will be explained and you will be given options as to your preference of care. The doctor and/or staff will then proceed with your selection. Depending upon your choice you may walk out with functional orthotics in one hour or you may see their arrival within a week or two.
